Alternative Energy

Alberta is a world leader in exploration and development of energy resources. Lethbridge shares that pedigree. As one of the sunniest and windiest places in Canada, Lethbridge is poised to become one of Canada’s greenest cities.

Looking west and south, giant wind turbines dot the horizon. Additional electrical transmission capacity will bring new wind farms onto the grid. Lethbridge College’s Wind Turbine Technician Training Program further establishes Lethbridge as a centre of wind energy development.

More residents and businesses are looking to other alternatives, including solar and geothermal heating.

Commercial developments such as the newest First Choice Savings Branch use green technologies in the construction and operation of their business.

Lethbridge is also home to SunRidge - Canda’s first green built residential community.

Biofuel production and development uses southern Alberta’s sunshine to produce crops to feed the world’s energy demand. Kyoto Fuels’ Biodiesel processing facility has the capacity to produce 66 million litres when it opens early this year.

Water is the lifeblood of southern Alberta and it was irrigation that allowed for much of the region’s agricultural development of the last 100 years. The University’s Alberta Water and Environmental Science Building houses a diverse group of experts and graduate students to study the sustainability of this important resource.
