Celebrate Lethbridge: Educational Institutions

Lethbridge College

Lethbridge College, established in 1957, was the first publicly funded college in Canada.

The annual Lethbridge College Foundation Clayton Allan Wine Auction was the first of its kind in Alberta. In 2007, the 17th annual event raised more than $115,000, the largest amount raised in its history and bringing the total amount raised to over $1 million.

Lethbridge College was the first educational institution in North America to have pay by cell-phone parking from www.new-parking.com – started in 2005.

Lethbridge College was the first college in Canada to receive a Canada Foundation for Innovation grant, a grant normally given only to universities.

Lethbridge College is the only post-secondary institution in Canada approved to deliver BZEE (Bildungszentrum für Erneuerbare Energian e.V.) certified programs. BZEE is the internationally recognized German organization formed by major wind power industry organizations. It educates instructors to teach to German specifications, the current world standard. In 2007 Lethbridge College purchased nine wind energy turbines that will become the core of a program anticipated to, in the future, deliver to a worldwide market.

The Bachelor of Applied Arts – Correctional Studies program offered at Lethbridge College is the only one of its kind in Canada. This degree meets or surpasses entry-level requirements for positions in federal and provincial jurisdictions and meets Correctional Service of Canada requirements for promotion to management and supervisory positions.

Lethbridge College is the only Canadian educational institution to offer a Therapeutic Recreation program with a specialization in gerontology. Graduating students have found employment in this specialized field across Canada.

Lethbridge College is the only school in Alberta to offer a Bachelor of Applied Science in Conservation Enforcement. Program graduates possess the necessary academic knowledge and applied skills in natural resource law enforcement for successful careers in federal, provincial or municipal agencies, as well as the private sector.

Lethbridge College and the University of Lethbridge employ approximately 7 percent of employed citizens in Lethbridge.

University of Lethbridge

The University of Lethbridge was the first university in Western Canada to establish a Native American Studies degree program (1975) and department. In addition, the University of Lethbridge was among the first to create a management degree program in self-government and Aboriginal business development.

In 1990 the University of Lethbridge was the first university in Alberta to implement a management co-op program. More than 100 employers from across the country currently participate in the co-op program.

One of the most significant architectural structures in Canada, University of Lethbridge University Hall was designed by renowned Canadian Arthur Ericksen. In May 2007, University Hall was featured in the 2007 Canada Post Stamp Program as part of a four commemorative stamp tribute to the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. The University of Lethbridge Campus spans more than 500 acres and is nestled on the banks of the Old Man River.

The University of Lethbridge Art Gallery has one of the most significant holdings of art in the country. With over 13,000 objects, the collection reflects art movements in Canada, America and Europe as well as media ranging from drawing, printmaking and painting to photography, sculpture and installation. The majority of works span the 19th and 20th centuries, although earlier period collections continue to grow as do 21st century additions.

Dr. Brian Kolb and his colleagues at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CCBN) at the University of Lethbridge are considered the world’s leading researchers in brain and behavioural studies. The CCBN is the only research facility of its kind in Canada.

Dr. Bill Cade, University of Lethbridge President and Entomologist, specializes in the research of insect acoustics, specifically crickets and cockroaches. He maintains an active research program through which he trains and hires graduate and post-graduate students. His research has been used to refine sound waves in hearing aid technology.

The University of Lethbridge Addictions Counselling program offers the only baccalaureate level Addictions Counselling degree in Canada. The program was developed to provide specialized and high-level training to students whose career goal is to provide counselling and therapy to addicted individuals.

University of Lethbridge Faculty of Education provides students with twice the practicum experience as other schools and boasts a 98 percent employment rate.
