The University of Lethbridge was the first university in Western Canada to establish a Native American Studies degree program (1975) and department. In addition, the University of Lethbridge was among the first to create a management degree program in self-government and Aboriginal business development.
In 1990 the University of Lethbridge was the first university in Alberta to implement a management co-op program. More than 100 employers from across the country currently participate in the co-op program.
One of the most significant architectural structures in Canada, University of Lethbridge University Hall was designed by renowned Canadian Arthur Ericksen. In May 2007, University Hall was featured in the 2007 Canada Post Stamp Program as part of a four commemorative stamp tribute to the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. The University of Lethbridge Campus spans more than 500 acres and is nestled on the banks of the Old Man River.
The University of Lethbridge Art Gallery has one of the most significant holdings of art in the country. With over 13,000 objects, the collection reflects art movements in Canada, America and Europe as well as media ranging from drawing, printmaking and painting to photography, sculpture and installation. The majority of works span the 19th and 20th centuries, although earlier period collections continue to grow as do 21st century additions.
Dr. Brian Kolb and his colleagues at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CCBN) at the University of Lethbridge are considered the world’s leading researchers in brain and behavioural studies. The CCBN is the only research facility of its kind in Canada.
Dr. Bill Cade, University of Lethbridge President and Entomologist, specializes in the research of insect acoustics, specifically crickets and cockroaches. He maintains an active research program through which he trains and hires graduate and post-graduate students. His research has been used to refine sound waves in hearing aid technology.
The University of Lethbridge Addictions Counselling program offers the only baccalaureate level Addictions Counselling degree in Canada. The program was developed to provide specialized and high-level training to students whose career goal is to provide counselling and therapy to addicted individuals.
University of Lethbridge Faculty of Education provides students with twice the practicum experience as other schools and boasts a 98 percent employment rate.
Lethbridge College and the University of Lethbridge employ approximately 7 percent of employed citizens in Lethbridge.
