Startup Canada in Lethbridge
June 7, 2012
Lethbridge -
Economic Development Lethbridge is pleased to be hosting Startup Canada on June 7 & 8 as part of a six-month national tour to celebrate and inspire entrepreneurship across the country. Lethbridge is one of four Alberta cities taking part in the national tour that will bring entrepreneurs together in a collective environment to identify issues, share ideas and develop solutions that will contribute to a shared vision for Canada’s entrepreneurial future.
“Fostering a culture of entrepreneurship is becoming more and more important throughout North America so we are pleased the Startup Canada initiative is coming to Lethbridge,” says Economic Development Lethbridge CEO Cheryl Dick. “Not only so we can have input into the federal process but so we can gather together and figure out what we need to do in Lethbridge to help businesses grow and expand.”
Startup Canada’s Lethbridge activities include a kick-off ceremony and media event, community reception and a region-wide town hall session targeting all levels of entrepreneurs. “It is so important that we have been able to engage entrepreneurs of all levels,” adds Dick. “We value the perspectives of new people with new ideas who want to get started as well as those who are already in business that can share their first-hand experience including challenges they have faced as well as their business success.”
Startup Canada is an entrepreneur-led, national movement to enhance the nation’s competitiveness and prosperity through entrepreneurship. Its national tour is traveling coast to coast to engage more than 25,000 Canadians and 250 partner organizations through a series of Town Hall Meetings and Fringe Events, and to develop community-driven solutions to challenges facing entrepreneurs today.
“The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Lethbridge and, as a city, we are committed to fostering a business- friendly environment.” says City of Lethbridge Mayor Rajko Dodic. “This is a great opportunity to showcase our city and provide exposure for Lethbridge entrepreneurs to be highlighted on a national stage.”
In addition to being championed by patrons such as Brett Wilson (Host of RiskyBusinessTV, former Dragon & serial entrepreneur), Heather Reisman (Founder, Indigo Books & Music), Dani Reiss (Founder, Canada Goose), and Michael Legary (Founder and Chief Strategy Officer, Seccuris Inc.), Startup Canada has also received support nationally from a number of ambassadors and industry sponsors Microsoft, Gowlings and Ernst & Young.
Other sponsors include Best Western, Kick Ass Media, PubliAir, the Ottawa Technology Transfer Network, VideoBooth, the Association of University Research Parks Canada, the Canadian Association of Business Incubation, the Evidence Network, Francis Moran & Associates, FreshBooks, Global Advantage Consulting Group, MSBi Valorisation, Podio, Backbone Magazine, HootSuite, ITWorld Canada, NextMTL, Paper.li, and Techvibes.
