Top Judo athletes compete on national stage
June 29, 2010
Lethbridge -
From July 2 -4, Lethbridge will be hosting the 2010 Canadian Youth Judo Championships. More than 450 athletes between the ages of 13 – 19 and 85 coaches from across Canada will take part in the national tournament which is being held at the Lethbridge College Val Matteotti Gymnasium.
“This event will showcase the best athletes from across the country”, says event director Ralph VanWerkhoven. “We are proud to have 12 athletes from Southern Alberta on the provincial team, and wish them the best of luck at the event.”
The national tournament, which qualifies athletes for the Canadian Judo Team, will be awarding commemorative medals honouring the late Dr. Yosh Senda, Sensei. A life member of Judo Canada, and former Lethbridge resident, Senda brought a rich history to the sport on a provincial, national and Olympic level. He received Canada’s first and only ninth degree black belt, was Judo Canada’s national coach for 10 years and was also a recipient of the Order of Canada. His service to the sport will be remembered for many years to come.
Following the tournament, a junior national training camp will take place from July 5 – 8. This camp, which is mandatory for potential world championships participants, will include more than 300 athletes who will utilize both the gymnasium and residences at Lethbridge College.
“We are thrilled that Lethbridge will be hosting this national conference,” says Kerry Lowe, Director of Convention and Event Development, Economic Development Lethbridge. “I am confident that our excellent hospitality and service industry will make the athletes, coaches and fans feel welcome and appreciated.” Lowe adds an event like this benefits the area’s economy and will generate over $330,000 in direct spending.
